7 Mistakes You’re Making at North West Wedding Fairs (and How to Fix Them)

Congratulations! You’re engaged, you’ve got the ring, and now the real fun (and let’s be honest, a little bit of the stress) begins. If you’re living in Cheshire, Lancashire, Shropshire, or anywhere across our beautiful North West, you probably already know that we are spoiled for choice when it comes to stunning venues and incredible wedding suppliers.

Wedding fairs are the heartbeat of the planning process. They are where your Pinterest board starts to feel real. You can smell the flowers, taste the cake, and feel the weight of that potential dream dress. At Fairydust Events, we’ve been running award-winning wedding fayres for years, and we’ve seen it all: from the ultra-prepared "Spreadsheet Brides" to the lovely couples who look a bit like deer in headlights the moment they walk through the door.

To make sure your next trip to a wedding fair is a total success (and not just a bag full of paper you’ll never look at again), we’ve rounded up the seven biggest mistakes couples make and, more importantly, how you can fix them.

1. Arriving Without a "Game Plan"

One of the most common mistakes is treated a wedding fair like a Sunday stroll. While we love a relaxed vibe at our events, walking in without knowing what you actually need can lead to major decision fatigue.

The Mistake: Wandering aimlessly and letting every vendor pull you in for a chat, even if you’ve already booked your photographer or decided on your venue. You’ll end up exhausted and overwhelmed before you’ve even seen half the room.

How to Fix It: Before you set off for one of our upcoming fairs in Shropshire or Preston, sit down with your partner and list your top three priorities. Is it the décor? The entertainment? The dress? Head straight to those suppliers first. If you’ve already ticked "Venue" off your list, give yourself permission to walk past the venue stands and focus on the finishing touches.

2. Missing Out on the "Early Bird" Perks

At Fairydust Events, we pride ourselves on making our fairs accessible and rewarding. But you’d be surprised how many people miss out on the best bits because of timing!

The Mistake: Showing up ten minutes before the fair closes or not pre-registering for your tickets.

How to Fix It: We offer FREE entry to brides and grooms, and for the first 50 attendees, we often have our legendary goody bags filled with treats, discounts, and the latest bridal magazines. To make sure you’re in that top 50, aim to arrive right as the doors open. Also, pre-registering online ensures a smoother entry so you can get straight to the magic.

3. Not Checking Supplier "Street Cred"

It’s easy to get swept away by a beautiful display of fairy lights or a stunning three-tier cake. But how do you know if that supplier is actually reliable?

The Mistake: Booking a supplier purely based on their booth appearance without checking their reputation or local standing.

How to Fix It: Look for suppliers who are recognized for their excellence. For example, did you know Fairydust Events has won the "Best Wedding Planners Preston" award three years running? We only partner with suppliers we trust. While you’re at a booth, don’t be afraid to ask for their Instagram handle or check their reviews on your phone.

4. Forgetting to Use Your Phone (The Right Way!)

Your phone is your best friend at a wedding fair, but many couples use it for the wrong things: like scrolling through TikTok while waiting in line!

The Mistake: Not taking photos of the specific details you like, or forgetting to take a photo of the supplier’s name alongside the product. By the time you get home, you’ll have a photo of a beautiful bouquet but no idea who made it!

How to Fix It: Take a photo of the supplier’s business card first, then take photos of their work. This keeps your camera roll organized. Even better, follow them on Instagram right there and then. This helps you get a feel for their day-to-day style and consistency.

5. Overlooking the "Modern" Guest Experience

Most couples focus heavily on the "Big Four": Venue, Food, Dress, and Photos. While those are vital, many couples make the mistake of ignoring the interactive elements that make a wedding memorable for guests.

The Mistake: Sticking only to traditional guestbooks or standard entertainment options because you haven't seen the alternatives in person.

How to Fix It: Keep an eye out for unique services like our Audio Guestbook Hire. Instead of a dusty book that sits on a shelf, an audio guestbook allows your friends and family to leave heartfelt (and often hilarious) voice messages on a vintage-style phone. It’s a huge trend for 2026/2027 and seeing it set up at a fair is the best way to understand why it's such a hit. Check out our planning guide for more ideas on modernizing your big day.

6. Being Scared to Ask About "On-the-Day" Discounts

North West wedding suppliers are some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet, but they are also there to do business. Many couples feel awkward asking about pricing or deals.

The Mistake: Assuming the prices on the brochures are set in stone or failing to ask if there’s a special "fayre discount" for booking or enquiring that day.

How to Fix It: Almost every supplier at a Fairydust event will have an exclusive offer for attendees. Whether it’s 10% off your photography package, a free upgrade on your floral arrangements, or a discount on full wedding planning services, it’s always worth asking: "Do you have any special offers for today's visitors?" You could save hundreds of pounds just by asking that one simple question.

7. Going at it Completely Alone

While it's your wedding, trying to navigate a room full of 40+ suppliers, fashion shows, and cake samples can be a lot for one person to handle.

The Mistake: Attending alone and feeling the pressure to make decisions, or bringing a group of ten bridesmaids and getting distracted by too many opinions.

How to Fix It: Bring a "Support Squad" of one or two people. This could be your partner (highly recommended!) or a trusted friend or parent who knows your style and budget. They can help you carry the goody bags, take notes, and act as a sounding board when you’re trying to decide between two amazing caterers. If you’re feeling really stuck, you can even talk to us about on-the-day coordination to take the weight off your shoulders entirely.
